Camp O'Donnell

Camp O'Donnell

The No assigned to Camp O'Donnell is lists as 4 in the National Archives, Maryland but 13 in Volume 5 - see page 66. The evidence of it being 13 provided in the book is overwhelming but how did the seemingly incorrect information in the NA occur?

From David Tett

Good question and this is not the only camp where postal history has showed the NA records to be incorrect (Eg Corregidor was Camp 9 not 7 as recorded in the NA). There could be several explanations.

The source of the info in the NA is not clear but I believe came from Post liberation interviews of POWs. They could have been incorrectly recorded or memory may have been faulty? Alternatively O'Donnell may have had its number changed from 4 to 13. This seems to me unlikely but its possible. Logically one would have expected it to be No 1 as it was the first camp used and the biggest in the early days, but we know Cabanatuan was no 1. This suggests Camps were only numbered when men were being transferred to the work camps. ie when O'Donnell was rapidly being emptied and Cabanatuan became the central camp. Re Corregidor similar explanations could apply . There may have been two camps on Corregidor, 7 and 9, as the location of Camp 7 has never been established although known to exist. Further study of cards from men known to be in particular places will be the likely source of more complete and accurate information. Incidentally on p66 Powleit's card referred to was from Camp 13 not 11. Apologies

Just to follow up on previous posting there is a card known to be from O'Donnell - the name of the camp was crossed out and replaced with Camp 13 see Vol 5 page 52
