The David Nelson Archives at Kew

The David Nelson Archives at Kew

Postby testnumber1 » Wed Aug 10, 2011 10:03 pm

The major news of recent months is the location in the National Archives in Kew of the archives of David Nelson. See the article in the Times of 30th July 2011. Some of the records have been available in TNA for some years but the remainder have become available in TNA in April this year . This is a major find -the records have been sought by FEPOW historians for years. May well mean substantial amount of revision to Volume 1?

On page 204 of Vol 1, the number of items of POW mail lost in the crash in Ireland was given as 30000 carried and 2570 found. Did these figures actually include mail from sources other than POW as mail is known from West Africa with the DAMAGED BY FIRE IN TRANSIT handstamp?

From David Tett

The figures quoted are from newspaper reports at the time. The first figure is clearly an estimate (educated or otherwise) based on the items per mail bag. The second figure is probably a fairly accurate count of the mail retrieved from the mountain and forwarded onto the UK. My guess is this included all mail, not just the POW cards. The number of items of such mail actually known is extremely small. Can a specialist Irish airmail collector help or does anybody know how to access the manifests of mail loaded at Lagos Freetown, Lisbon or elsewhere? I have also never been sure where the POW mail was loaded. I think Lisbon but could it have been Lagos?
